It’s funny how powerful the senses can be. Beautiful music that brings back memories of my childhood makes me well up the minute I hear it. When I’m feeling nervous on an airplane and my husband holds my hand, I instantly feel (a little) more relaxed. And the smell of my parents’ house on Thanksgiving tells me, unmistakably, that I am home. So I thought this would be an appropriate mystery photo for Thanksgiving week.
Can you guess where in Barrington I took this picture? You’ve probably driven past this sign a million times and we have a great prize for the winner of this new photo contest. We’ll get to this week’s prize in a minute. But first, let’s talk about last week’s winner. Just moments ago we drew the winning name and it is…
Thanks for your guess and congratulations, Bill. I’ll be emailing you this afternoon with details about how to receive your signed, limited-edition, 8×10 print of Barrington photographer, Susan McConnell’s award winning photo called “Gray Lady’s Ghost“. She took the photo at the site of the old Jewel Tea Building in Barrington, not long after it was demolished. Click HERE to view last week’s photo and to see all of the guesses. You’re right, Bill. It’s a picture of the antique Chesapeake & Ohio Railway “Chessie System” wooden caboose which has been parked outside Barrington’s Ice House Mall for years. The little cat silhouette that rests inside the letter “C” was derived from a Viennese artist’s etching and was first used in the railways advertising in 1933. The “Ches-C” cat logo was so popular that the company changed its name to “Chessie System” in 1972, after a merger with two other railways.
