Home Newsroom 238. Guess Where Wednesday" & Last Week’s Winner

It’s funny how powerful the senses can be. Beautiful music that brings back memories of my childhood makes me well up the minute I hear it. When I’m feeling nervous on an airplane and my husband holds my hand, I instantly feel (a little) more relaxed. And the smell of my parents’ house on Thanksgiving tells me, unmistakably, that I am home.  So I thought this would be an appropriate mystery photo for Thanksgiving week.

Guess Where Wednesday Weekly Mystery Photo Contest at 365Barrington.com

Can you guess where in Barrington I took this picture? You’ve probably driven past this sign a million times and we have a great prize for the winner of this new photo contest. We’ll get to this week’s prize in a minute. But first, let’s talk about last week’s winner. Just moments ago we drew the winning name and it is…

365 Barrington Mystery Photo Contest Winner Revealed

Thanks for your guess and congratulations, Bill. I’ll be emailing you this afternoon with details about how to receive your signed, limited-edition, 8×10 print of Barrington photographer, Susan McConnell’s award winning photo called “Gray Lady’s Ghost“. She took the photo at the site of the old Jewel Tea Building in Barrington, not long after it was demolished. Click HERE to view last week’s photo and to see all of the guesses. You’re right, Bill. It’s a picture of the antique Chesapeake & Ohio RailwayChessie System” wooden caboose which has been parked outside Barrington’s Ice House Mall for years.  The little cat silhouette that rests inside the letter “C” was derived from a Viennese artist’s etching and was first used in the railways advertising in 1933.  The “Ches-C” cat logo was so popular that the company changed its name to “Chessie System” in 1972, after a merger with two other railways.  Source  Here’s a more revealing look at the Chessie System Caboose.

  • Only one guess per person is allowed.
  • Only guesses posted here on this website, not on Facebook or Twitter, will be entered into the weekly drawing.

Good luck with your guessing and here’s one more look at this week’s Mystery Photo.

Hi! 😁 Today's Word of the Day is 汉语 hàn yǔ -- literally "Han Language."

So, we're backtracking... or maybe just following the path of yesterday's post 😂. Either way, it might behoove you to know the context of this word.

The 汉 hàn in 汉语 refers to the Han ethnic group -- the largest of the 56 (government-proclaimed) Chinese ethnic groups. Some data have indicated that Han people comprise 90% or more of the population. So, it's unsurprising that this large group has gotten to name one of the most common terms for Mandarin. (Remember, Mandarin is what we learn at BHS and is the official language of China. There are other dialects/languages in existence.)

Anyhoo, the point is that if one is going to be referring to Mandarn Chinese as a language, it wouldn't hurt to know how to say it two ways! 🙃

普通话 and 汉语 can be used in most of the same contexts -- 汉语 might be a little less eloquent, but you won't get in trouble for using either. 🙂
