Would you like to quiet your mind, reprogram negative thought patterns, plant new intentions and find peace in the moment?  SIGN ME UP!  (And sorry for screaming.) Barrington portrait photographer, Thomas Balsamo will be leading a guided meditation from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. this Monday, July 27th.

Post - Thomas Balsamo - Guided Meditation

Thomas just started treatments after his diagnosis of stage 4 Mantle Cell Lymphoma and will is leading these guided meditations every other week at Acacia Organics in Barrington’s Ice House Mall, 200 Applebee Street.  Enter through the door by Chessie’s Restaurant and bring a pillow or a blanket to sit on.  The event is open to everyone, participation is free and donations are optional.

Monday’s meditation will explore: Methods of quieting our minds, identifying and reprogramming negative thought patterns, planting new intentions and finding peace in the moment. The event is sponsored by Cancer Soul Survivors, a local organization behind new initiatives to support cancer survivors, caregivers and service providers.  If you can’t make this Monday’s meditation, there are more upcoming meditations scheduled for Monday, August 10th and Monday, August 24th.  Click here to connect with Cancer Soul Survivors on Facebook.

“Perhaps the most hurtful impact of the stigma surrounding mental illness is the common belief that women with mental illness cannot be good mothers. In a society that values ‘self-sacrificing mothers’ and rewards adherence to gender norms, we often deem that a ‘good mother’ has few needs and challenges of her own; rather, she can commit herself in her entirety to her children.

Mental illness can certainly make some aspects of motherhood more challenging, but it doesn’t disqualify those of us living with a mental health condition from being good parents. In fact, research suggests that many issues faced by mothers with mental illness are generic to all parents. While mothers with mental illness may experience more unique challenges from their symptoms, or from medication and treatment obligations, these risks can be managed with the guidance of a good collaborative care team.”
