On this day, January 31st in 1957, Decca Records announced that Bill Haley & His Comets’, ‘Rock Around the Clock‘ had sold over a million copies in the UK, mostly on 10inch 78’s. The rock & roll song written in the 12-bar-blues format was a number one single on both the United States and United Kingdom charts and also reentered the UK Singles Chart in the 1960s and 1970s. Billy Haley’s recording is widely considered to be the song that, more than any other, brought rock and roll into mainstream culture around the world.
