Growing and Cooking with Herbs

If you’re like me, you may occasionally fantasize about having your own herb garden à la The Barefoot Contessa at her home in the Hamptons. When I’m cooking spaghetti sauce, for example, and realize that I’m out of oregano, I dream of grabbing the garden scissors, walking outside and clipping a handful from the back yard. Then I wake up and smell my sauce spattered stove. Maybe one of these days I’ll get that green thumb I’ve always wanted. But in the meantime, I’m going to see what I can learn at the South Barrington Garden Club’s meeting this Thursday morning at 9AM. Herb expert, Kathy Vitalo will be there to talk about cooking and making infused oils and vinegars with herbs grown right in your own back yard.

The guest speaker is the owner of a small, family-owned and operated herb vinegar farm in Willow Springs.  She’ll be sharing tips and recipes, plus she’ll have some of her own award-winning herb vinegars on hand for you to sample and purchase.  If you’d like to learn more about planting an herb garden, you’re welcome to join the garden club’s session this Thursday morning at 9AM.  There is no cost to attend.

The South Barrington Garden club meets the first Thursday of each month. Sometimes they feature speakers and sometimes they take field trips to Chicago-area gardens and nurseries. But the group’s president, Anita Bierbaum says, “You don’t have to have a PHD in Botany to belong. We’re all just trying to learn more about flowers, plants, gardening and horticulture.” And in the understated words of Ina Garten, “How bad could that be?”
