Mother’s Day is tomorrow and there are a million things you could run out and buy for your mom. But Barrington business owner, Theresa Patton recently reminded me that there’s no gift more powerful than putting pen to paper. Theresa owns TT Patton stationery shop in downtown Barrington. When I asked her what inspired her to open her five-year-old business, she mentioned her mailman.
Theresa says that she has a system for organizing incoming mail. Anything handwritten goes in one pile, magazines in another and the bills go into the third. Can you guess which one she opens first? Whether it’s scribbles on a page or calligraphy on luxury paper, Theresa says handwritten notes are treasured and that’s why she loves encouraging people to write. In this age of email, texts and Twitter, It’s nice to have someone like Theresa to remind us that our keyboards are an awesome tool, but pens are personal.
She has a great selection of fountain pens which range in price from under $20 to over $400. You can browse through books of custom stationery and buy a box of 50 cards for $25 or up to $800. She’ll also help you design a “peel and stick” personalized stamp which you can use for your return address and change up for special occasions.
But she doesn’t just sell the supplies, Theresa helps teach the techniques. She hosts adult writing workshops with guest instructors at least once a month for things like songwriting, journaling, creative writing and calligraphy. She’s also hosting week-long writing camps for kids this summer. For $110, your 4th, 5th or 6th graders can learn to write poetry, fiction, non-fiction or a lovely thank you note. Now that’s a skill that will last a lifetime!
To learn more about Theresa’s products and classes, visit her website at TTPatton.com. You’ll find her shop right in downtown Barrington at 123 East Station Street. She’s super friendly, too. If you have questions, give her a call (847) 277-0073. And if you really want to get her attention, just sit down and write her a note.
