Managing the Cuba Township Food Pantry

235. Help Replenish Dwindling Food Pantry Supplies

The grocery stores will be packed this week with people pushing baskets overflowing with all the fixins for Thanksgiving dinner. It’ll be hectic, it’ll be crazy and the cash registers will be working overtime. But there’s a growing group of Barrington families who won’t be making that big trip to the grocery store because times are really tight this year. “Every dime is going to put a roof over their head, gas in their car and heat in their home.” Kate Formichella of the Cuba Township Food Pantry says, “For some people it’s a huge shock to realize that they have to ask for food. But I can say there is not one single neighborhood that has not been affected in Cuba Township.”
Cheryl Tanaka and Kate Formichella are Cuba Township’s community liaisons and they’ve been very busy filling 70 boxes of stuffing, gravy, green beans, potatoes, turkey coupons, bread…all the basics needed to prepare Thanksgiving dinner. 70 families this year, in Cuba Township alone, have asked the pantry for food to make their holiday meal on Thursday. Kate says, “When I started here there were only 25 families who asked for help and that was five years ago.” That’s an increase of almost 300-percent!…

Art in the Barn Weekend at Good Shepherd Hospital

177. Art in the Barn at Good Shepherd Hospital

This is a big weekend for our friends up at Good Shepherd Hospital. They’re hosting their 36th annual “Art in the Barn” event on the hospital grounds from 10AM to 5PM on both Saturday and Sunday and they have a full schedule of art and entertainment planned, including live music, food and pony rides!

“Art in the Barn” began in 1974 when a group of ten women and local artists came up with the idea to help raise money to build the hospital here in Barrington. It started as a show with 30 artists, and this weekend, there will be about 180 artists displaying their works for sale and they’re expecting about 6,500 people to attend. There will be painters, jewelry-makers, sculptors, photographers, ceramics artists and woodworkers on hand, just to name a few. The art will be on display in barns that were used as food testing sites when the property was owned by Quaker Oats. Over the years, the annual juried art show has raised over $2.5 Million dollars for Good Shepherd Hospital. It’s a great way to spend a fall weekend in Barrington and support our local hospital at the same time.…
