127. Vote for Your Favorite 2012 Spring Break Photos

I love how a little time away from the office brings out a more relaxed, appreciative and creative outlook on life. Armed with cameras and a little beautiful scenery, the photographers in this year’s Spring Break photo contest captured stunning images that let your mind drift with memories of what true relaxation feels like. The challenge in this year’s contest was simple:  In a photograph, show what spring break 2012 looked like to you. Here’s one of the photos that best answers that question for me.  No beach.  Just a boy and a moose…
We received beautiful images for our contest this year and need your help with choosing our winners. To cast your vote, just put checks in the boxes by your favorite photos below. The image that gets the most votes will win our 2012 Spring Break photo contest and we have awards for three winners….…

99. Give it Up for “Melty the Snowman”

Well it turns out our recent snowstorm didn’t produce the best kind of snow for making snowmen. They couldn’t create the fleet of Frosties I’d envisioned during St. Matthew’s Snowman Building Day last weekend. But we still managed to find a winner for our 365 Barrington Snowman Contest. I just CAN NOT allow the Sweet Spot candy prize to go uneaten! Plus, I have this little policy of finishing what I start. So I set out to find our 365 Barrington Snowman Contest winner and I didn’t have to go far.

But I did feel like a big dork when my neighbor caught me taking a picture of the week-old, half-melted snowman in their front lawn. She says he looked a lot cuter last week.  She’s the same neighbor who recently watched me back out of the driveway, crash into our babysitter’s car and then drive away to get my daughter to preschool on time. So I think this one deserves a drumroll….

And the winner of the 365 Barrington Snowman Contest is……

68. Spot the Scarecrow to Win a Sweet Prize

It’s a beautiful fall day, it’s Friday to boot and I’m in the mood for a contest! Who feels like spotting scarecrows this weekend? Businesses throughout Barrington have decorated their storefronts with scarecrows for the Village’s annual community scarecrow design competition and I’ve been out on the streets snapping photos. Today we have a winner from last week’s first ever 365 Barrington Spot the Scarecrow contest and we have another mystery scarecrow for you to identify. Do you know where this artsy scarecrow is chillin’ this fall?

I’m told that the hot pink flower pot will be a dead giveaway, but we’ll see.  If you can tell us what business this straw painter belongs to, you could be our next winner and we have a great prize for this week. But first, let’s talk about last week’s winner and the fireman scarecrow we featured. We had some great guesses and we drew our winner’s name today. We’ll reveal the winner after we take a look at the man behind the scarecrow. He’s Brian Long, the owner of Long and Company Jewelers at 105 E. Main Street.  Brian says he’s pretty proud of the store’s straw man this year who has been decked out in fireman gear, a tribute to the heroes of September 11th.

You’ll find Brian and Long and Company Jewelers right in the center of town, on the southeast corner of Route 59 (Hough Street) and Lake Cook Road (Main Street). He sells gorgeous jewelry, offers jewelry and watch repair, cleaning and appraisal services plus, he’s the exclusive Waterford Crystal retailer in town. The winner who correctly identified the scarecrow outside of Brian’s storefront wins $30 dollars worth of in-store services. It’ll come in handy because they’ll fix or clean your jewelry or put a new battery in your watch while you wait. The store has a great laid-back vibe, too, and was beautifully refurbished by the Longs before they opened for business back in 2006. In fact, as you’ll see by her guess, this week’s winner is already a big fan and her name is……

If you spend any time passing through downtown Barrington, chances are you’ve seen this guy hanging out on his bale of hay. But be careful! Don’t let the reflection fool you. A local business designed this straw fireman to pay tribute to the heroes of September 11th……

354. 365 Barrington SPRING BREAK Photo Contest

We’re heading into the home stretch here at 365Barrington.com! I just reminded my husband that, after next Sunday, we’ll only be FOUR DAYS AWAY from day 365. Because our site sees so much traffic on weeks when we host community photo contests and because today is the FIRST DAY OF SPRING, I decided now would be a good time to host one more contest before the year is complete. It’s our first ever “Spring Break Photo Contest” and the grand prize will be a great way for our winner to relax and have fun when the vacation is over.

The rules are easy. I just made them up. Anyone is eligible to enter this contest, whether you’ve jetted off to sea or ski or are having a “Staycation” like we are right here at home. If you participated in one of our past photo contests, that’s great! We’d love to see more of your photos this time. All you have to do is submit your favorite photo or photos which answer this question:…

2011 Chili Champion at the South Barrington Arboretum

306. Be Crowned the South Barrington Chili Champ

The results are in after Saturday’s “Chilly Challenge” Chili Cook-off in South Barrington. About 300 chili fans from in and around Barrington met at the South Barrington Arboretum Saturday afternoon to sample and vote for chili prepared by seven local restaurants.

I was one of the guest judges and snapped a few photos on the chili tour, which started at Pinstripes Bowling, Bocce & Bistro. A shuttle whisked the chili tasters off to all seven restaurants, which included Pinstripes, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant, Nozuzmi Asian & Japanese Cuisine, Gold Class Cinemas, L’Eiffel Bistrot & Creperie, Panera Bread and defending 2010 Chili Champion, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. That’s a lot of chili for only $10 and it was so much fun! Almost all of the participants cast ballots for their favorites at the very end and it was a very close vote. But the 2011 South Barrington Arboretum Chili Champion is……

Holiday Lights from National Lampoons Christmas Vacation

245. 1st Annual 365Barrington Holiday Lights Contest

Even if you try to ignore it, there is no escaping the fact that Christmastime is here.  “The Holiday Lite“ has been broadcasting radio holiday tunes since well before Thanksgiving, Christmas commercials have taken over the TV and holiday lights are popping up on homes throughout Barrington. So I decided to just give in to the holiday hype and give our weekly Wednesday photo contest a yule-tide twist for the month of December. Between now and Christmas, we’ll be accepting nominations here at 365Barrington.com for the best Barrington Christmas lights. And you don’t have to decorate your home like Clark Griswold to win this contest!

If you or someone you know goes all out with their Christmas decorations or lights up their home beautifully, we’d love to hear about it. There are FOUR winning categories in this contest:…

We’re going back in time for this week’s “Mystery Photo” here at 365Barrington.com. This picture comes straight from the Barrington Area Library’s archive of historic photos. You can’t take a picture like this today because this building is no longer standing. But if you’ve been in Barrington a while, this one will probably be obvious. Can you guess what this is a picture of?

We’ll get to this week’s prize in a minute. But first, let’s talk about last week’s winner. Just moments ago we drew the winning name and it is……
