207. Score Big Bargains at Barrington Sidewalk Days
The 36th annual Barrington Sidewalk Days begin today and it’s a big and very busy weekend for business owners offering incredible discounts all over town. But with quite a few new shops that just opened in Barrington this year, the sidewalks are buzzing today with more activity and excitement than I’ve ever seen plus deals at every turn to feed the shopping frenzy. My first stop (and purchase) today was at Notice Accessories for Living on Cook Street.
Notice opened for business in Barrington this spring. Many of the shop’s hottest items are on sale, with discounts of up to 80% off on things like lotions, candles and clothes. They’re making way for new merchandise and store owner, Mari Barnes says this is a great weekend to tackle your gift shopping to-do list. “If you get good stuff at these prices, how can you not buy gifts for the holidays?”
Right next door, Angelina shop owner, Katie Kuempel says she ordered extra merchandise just for this weekend’s community-wide sale.
Katie is offering some of Angelina’s best selling bracelets at two and three-for-one prices and says things are selling fast.
But I really scored across the street at Grassroots, known for their stylishly relaxed everyday apparel & accessories for the entire family. My husband, who told me yesterday that he needs new shorts, has about five new pairs now, all of which I bought at Grassroots today, with the help of owners, Todd and Joy Rhodes.
Also at Grassroots, I picked up an adorable strawberry-print sundress for my three-year-old daughter for ONLY $5! With a major shopping high, I decided to go check out the new Barrington Running Company that just opened on Park Avenue.
I met the owners, Mark & Leanne Konicek, who told me a little about their Tuesday night Fun Runs, free yoga classes and the free video gait analysis they offer with the purchase of any pair of shoes!
My last stop was the Douglas Automotive tent, where I convinced owner, Doug McCallister and General Manager, Pat Moody to let me take their picture in front of the NASCAR vehicle they have on display. Douglas is featuring the car, courtesy of NASCAR driver, Dave Blaney, in the Sidewalk Days New, Exotic and Classic Car Show taking place Saturday in the Jewel parking lot.
Doug and Pat told me the picture might look better without them in it, but I have to disagree! 😉
With that quick look at some of today’s Sidewalk Days action, here’s the schedule of exciting events planned through Saturday……

111. Win a $500 Spree at the Barrington Community Expo
I’ve never won a “spree” before, but I hope to this weekend. That’s right, a $500 local shopping spree is UP FOR GRABS at one of the hottest events happening in Barrington on Saturday, March 10. Oh, and Elmo’s going to be there, too. Does it get more exciting than that? Out of the way, neighbors! I’m coming to hang with Elmo and win my spree at the Barrington Community Expo!!!
The Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Barrington Community Expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. TOMORROW, March 10th, at the Langendorf Center at the Barrington Park District. There will be great activities for kids going on so you can focus on checking out dozens of the Barrington area’s most successful businesses, win prizes and get free health screenings to assess your blood pressure, posture, muscle tone and stress levels. There’s nothing a $500 shopping spree can’t cure!…

74. 8th Annual Barrington Taste Fest and Expo
Once a year in Barrington, the finest local chefs all come together in one place to serve up a special menu of featured dishes for diners to sample. It’s called the Barrington Taste Fest & Expo, it’s happening Thursday night, October 27th, at the Millrose Restaurant in South Barrington and tickets are selling fast, but still available.
The event is organized by the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce as a way to help the community get acquainted with some of the latest offerings made by local restaurants, caterers, bakeries, breweries and wine representatives.
But it’s not just about the food. While you sip and sample, you’ll also be able to mingle with exhibitors representing Barrington businesses in a wide range of categories, including medical professionals, retailers, financial and real estate advisors. They’ll be sharing the space to feature their products and services while raffling great prizes. And the Chamber puts a fun spin on the event by giving you a passport when you walk through the door……

55. Get Social with Barrington Businesswomen
With Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and so many other popular networks, it has become WAY too easy to spend more time socializing online than in person, hasn’t it? I know. As a serial online networker, sadly, I speak from experience. But a group of Barrington businesswomen has come up with a fun way to get us all out from behind our laptops. They’re hosting a big party tomorrow night and rolling out the welcome mat for women right here in Barrington.
The group behind the party is called Barrington Women’s Biz Net, they’re part of the Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce and they’re all about giving women who own and work for businesses in Barrington a chance to meet, mingle and make new friends. The theme of their networking event tomorrow night is Come Sail Away, it’s FREE and it’ll definitely feel more like a party with opportunities to make great connections in person.…

31. Meet Cook Co. Board President, Toni Preckwinkle
Do you live or work in Cook County? Do you have questions about how our tax dollars are spent? Are you curious about the changes in store now that there’s a new Cook County Board President at the helm? Well, get this. The new woman on top, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, will be visiting Barrington on Monday of next week to talk about her plans for the county and answer our questions. It’s a rare opportunity to meet one of the key players in Cook County government, right in our own back yard! A great turnout will send a message that Barrington cares and is paying attention to county business, but there are only a few more hours left to RSVP.
Ms. Preckwinkle was elected last November and sworn in last December as the first woman elected president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. She succeeds Todd Stroger, whose family occupied a seat on the Cook County Board for 40 years. At the outset, Ms. Preckwinkle made a promise to repeal her predecessor’s sales tax increase. She also warned that her first county budget will include some big cuts to begin easing the county’s $478 million budget deficit.…

8. Spotlight on Barrington’s Stars Fashion Show
If you want to see the latest spring styles that are flying out of Barrington shops, you don’t want to miss a fast paced and fun fashion show & luncheon coming up in Barrington next week. It’s called the Spotlight on Barrington’s Stars. And that means there will be Barrington models wearing locally sold fashions to showcase the retailers in our community and promote shopping in 60010.
The Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce hosts this event each spring to showcase local businesses and I’m told this fashions in this year’s show will give you great ideas to update your spring and summer wardrobe.…
