154. CrossFit and ChiroFit Team Up for Student Athletes

Calling all middle school, high school and college athletes: It’s time to get fit! ChiroFit chiropractor Dr. Dave Crosson and CrossFit Barrington co-owners/coaches Brian Niven and Chris Bluse have joined forces to create a new summer Athletic Enhancement program to help you improve your game – whatever that game may be. Their goal is to provide a structured, safe, and properly coached program that addresses the whole athlete.
All three coaches are former college athletes: Dr. Dave Crosson played basketball, and CrossFit Coaches and Co-Owners Brian Niven and Chris Bluse were Division 1 and professional lacrosse players. Their athletic and professional experiences equip them with an exceptional knowledge base, all of which they applied in the creation of this program.
Dr. Crosson, who goes by “Dr. Dave” at ChiroFit, found CrossFit Barrington through a patient. He was immediately hooked on the diverse workouts, and has worked out there 5-6 days per week ever since. “In two years of working with CrossFit, I’ve personally seen more gains in strength and overall athletic ability than anywhere since I got out of college,” he says……

76. Books & Beyond: Take a Sentimental Journey in Genealogy

My father passed away about a year and a half ago. Losing a parent really leaves an emptiness in part of your heart, and it also diminishes your family’s collective memory. How long will I hold onto the stories he shared with me about growing up on Chicago’s northwest side, the traditions of his Polish upbringing, and family members I never had the opportunity to meet?
How complete is your family tree? Are you in a situation where you know little or nothing about the ancestors who came before you? Is there a long-held family secret or mystery you’d really love to solve while there is time?
The Barrington Area Library has some serious researchers on our staff, and they would be delighted to help you dig into your family’s history. We’re offering a new adventure this spring called Journeys in Genealogy. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to get some expert help with your genealogy – and be a little bit of a media superstar, too…(there’s more to this than research, let’s just say!)
What we’d like to do is capture the process of you leaping over your family history roadblocks – on camera. We’re big fans of programs like Antiques Roadshow and American Pickers, which reveal just how much fun it can be to explore the past. We can’t appraise your antiques or clean out your storage shed, but we can possibly shed light on your ancestry and create some real “aha!” moments……

191. Tour the World with Wine at Uncork Barrington 2012

Would you like to sample 50 quality wines from 10 regions of the world in 1 place tomorrow night? That’s what’s on the agenda for the 8th annual Uncork Barrington wine tasting happening tomorrow night, Friday, July 6th, in downtown Barrington. Today, we have the details about the wine, the food and some brand new features for this year’s event.

Uncork Barrington is one of the community’s most unique and social tasting events of the season, capping off Barrington’s 4th of July festivities before the tent retires for another year. We took part as sponsors of the first Uncork Barrington event eight years ago and I can attest that his is one party that keeps getting better with age.…

173. Welcome the New Season with the Summer Wine Walk

We have a libation theme going this weekend with a number of beverage-centered specials and events taking place in Barrington.  With the first day of summer only five days away, merchants downtown are getting a jump start on the season by hosting the first ever Summer Wine Walk, a compliment to the well-attended Winter Wine Walk they hosted in March.

The FREE event will be hosted by participating businesses surrounding Cook and Station Streets from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 16th.  Each merchant will have a wine map for you to grab so you can see what’s available for sipping before you move on to your next destination. Participating merchants will be offering a total of 14 wines to sample along with appetizers from Cooper’s Pizza.  And to add a little summer sizzle, Park Avenue Restaurant will feature live music with Brian Saltzman from 3 to 6 p.m.
More merchants have joined the downtown wine walk for tomorrow’s event.  Here’s a look at who’s participating and what you will enjoy as you power your way through the town……

152. Eat, Drink and be Booky with Hip New Social Club

There’s a new book club in town that’s a little more social than serious—which is perfect if you’re a reader who likes to enjoy a cocktail or two over discussions of plot and symbolism. “LIT” is the name of the Barrington Area Library’s brand new social book club for adults designed to let you have just that kind of light-hearted experience. And with a motto like “Eat, drink and be booky,” you’ll get exactly what you sign up for!

LIT is an out-on-the-town kind of club that will be hosted at a variety of local restaurants instead of at the library. The first one will be held at Park Avenue Restaurant &Wine Bar from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. next Monday, May 21……

142. Don Your Derby Hat for Barrington Children’s Charities

Dust off your derby hats and spruce up your seersucker suits, Barrington Children’s Charities’ second annual Run for the Roses Kentucky Derby party is coming up this Saturday and we’re all invited. Barrington Hills resident and Children’s Charities founder, Darby Hills (seen here on left), says there are fun new details in store for this year’s festivities, thanks, in part, to Kathleen McLaughlin, the local event planner behind the party.
Kentucky Derby-style hats in all shapes and sizes will be a big part of the entertainment at this Saturday’s event, held to benefit Barrington Children’s Charities and the national Blessings in a Backpack campaign. All proceeds from this weekend’s party will directly benefit Barrington School District 220 families who are part of the free and reduced lunches program……
