The North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, or NAHRA, gave Taco the award for the region that includes Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. The trainers at Walk On Farm say Taco is very deserving.…

291. Watch Jay Cutler Win His First Playoff Game

My husband, Bill, woke up today in a mood best described as “chipper”. It didn’t take long for me to realize why. “You should have your blog post for today be ‘Watch Jay Cutler Win His First Playoff Game’.” I might not be a football expert, but if talking about today’s Chicago Bears Divisional Playoff Game against the Seattle Seahawks makes Bill happy, this one works for me!

“I think it’s going to be a pretty tight game. The Bears need to pressure Seattle’s quarterback to win and protect Cutler.” I made Bill give me the scoop so I could write this post.…

290. Celebrate Dr. King by "Delivering the Dream"

There’s a special celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s legacy happening at Barrington High School tomorrow at 2PM. The Barrington Children’s Choir, Bataille Academy dancers, student groups and local church leaders will come together to share Dr. King’s message of pursuing dreams that make the world a better place.

The program is called “Delivering the Dream” and will last about an hour and fifteen minutes. Performers will bring to life specific voices from the past of great leaders like Dr. King, Cesar Chavez and Presidents Lyndon Johnson and Abraham Lincoln. “And in each case they will describe the dream they had to make the world better and how they were able to persevere and either achieve the dream or set in place the mechanism for others to live it out so that it wouldn’t die.” Community Church of Barrington Reverend, Dr. Zina Jacque, invited me to drop by their rehearsal yesterday.…

Winter Scenes from Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve

284. Take a Winter Walk Through Cuba Marsh

It may be crushingly cold outside, but ice and snow transform Cuba Marsh in beautiful ways this time of year.  Sometimes, when I drive past, curiosity calls and I can’t help but slow the car and turn my wheels into the forest preserve’s icy entrance.  The first thing I found during this visit reminded me of a flag, shocked into submission and buried beneath layers of wintry glass.

It looked like a lonesome surrender, but the beauty of Cuba Marsh is its diversity, combining marsh and prairie with woodland and savanna. A wide range of plants and animals make their homes here and, when I took a step back, I found that this flagsicle had a friend.…

279. EXERCISE MORE -2011 New Year’s Resolution #3

I’m one of those people who feels like I have to get back in shape before I go back to the gym. Kind of like cleaning the house before the cleaning lady comes. But I’ve decided that’s just not going to cut it anymore. I need to crawl out from behind this computer, get out of the office and get my exercise routine back on track. And this is the perfect time to do it! The Barrington Park District is hosting a big open house this Saturday for the 1-year anniversary of the new Fitness & Recreation Center.

The theme of the open house is “Get Fit & Have Fun in 2011”. From 10AM until 1PM on this Saturday, January 8th, you’ll be able to try out their exercise equipment and classes, meet their instructors and enjoy discounts on selected classes and 1-year Fitness Center Memberships. Grocery Shopping at the Barrington Jewel

278. COOK MORE – 2011 New Year’s Resolution #2

I’m about to show you something totally disgusting.   But let me start by explaining that I have fallen into this bad habit of regularly finding our family dinners in the frozen food aisle at the Barrington Jewel.  Photographer Anthony Tortoriello recently snapped a photo of that aisle during a late night visit and, though his image paints a cool and colorful picture, I’m expanding my grocery horizons in 2011 and will be filling my cart with more fresh, less frozen.
Now to the horrible picture that I took last month in my very own kitchen.  But I am warning you, if you sicken easily, you do NOT want to look too closely. THIS is what my husband, Bill recently cooked for dinner……
