With more snow in the overnight forecast, I’m happy to have reason to show you this photo I took during last May’s Barrington Art Festival. Puffy clouds, bright blue skies, sleeveless shirts and, yes, Barrington’s 2011 Memorial Day Weekend Art Festival are right around the corner. Do you remember how hot it was during last year’s festival? I do! Now I’m daydreaming….about sunshine and summer fun. (sigh) Ok, I’m back. Anyway, Barrington Art Festival organizers have just started recruiting all “youth” artists who want to feature their work this year.

Youth Art Division at the Barrington Art Festival

The company that runs Barrington’s art festival, Amdur Productions, just opened the application process for the festival’s Youth Art Division.

Young artists, from age 6 through 18, are invited to display their own original works and will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you know any young artists with a talent for painting, drawing, jewelry, ceramics, prints, fiber, sculpture, photography, glass or mixed media, let them know that now’s the time to sign up!

The 2011 Barrington Art Festival is again scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, from 10AM until 5PM on Saturday, May 28th and Sunday, May 29th. For more information or to apply for the Youth Art Division, call festival organizers at 847.926.4300, email them at info@AmdurProductions.com or visit their website AmdurProductions.com.

“Perhaps the most hurtful impact of the stigma surrounding mental illness is the common belief that women with mental illness cannot be good mothers. In a society that values ‘self-sacrificing mothers’ and rewards adherence to gender norms, we often deem that a ‘good mother’ has few needs and challenges of her own; rather, she can commit herself in her entirety to her children.

Mental illness can certainly make some aspects of motherhood more challenging, but it doesn’t disqualify those of us living with a mental health condition from being good parents. In fact, research suggests that many issues faced by mothers with mental illness are generic to all parents. While mothers with mental illness may experience more unique challenges from their symptoms, or from medication and treatment obligations, these risks can be managed with the guidance of a good collaborative care team.”
