I love combining the sensations of sweet and savory in my recipes and, for Day 7 of our 12 Days of Recipes series, we have a great option for a holiday appetizer that includes the perfect pairing.
Sweet and tart granny smith apples and rich savory flavorful cheese make a great pairing in this crustini appetizer. You can use Brie in place of the Gorgonzola and butter with equally divine results.
Granny Smith Apple & Gorgonzola Crustini
1 large baguette (see recipe at organizingdinner.com for Easy Salted Bread Loaf)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic salt
6 ounces Gorgonzola cheese
2 tablespoons butter
2 apples, peeled and sliced thin (granny smith or your favorite variety)
2 tablespoons finely chopped walnuts (optional)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Slice baguette about 1/2 inch thick. Brush toasts with olive oil, and sprinkle with garlic salt. Toast for two minutes until slightly firm. Meanwhile, blend cheese and butter. Spread cheese mixture on toasts, top with apples and optional walnuts, and return to oven for 6 minutes until cheese bubbles.
