There’s a new book club in town that’s a little more social than serious—which is perfect if you’re a reader who likes to enjoy a cocktail or two over discussions of plot and symbolism. “LIT” is the name of the Barrington Area Library’s brand new social book club for adults designed to let you have just that kind of light-hearted experience. And with a motto like “Eat, drink and be booky,” you’ll get exactly what you sign up for!

LIT is an out-on-the-town kind of club that will be hosted at a variety of local restaurants instead of at the library. The first one will be held at Park Avenue Restaurant &Wine Bar from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. next Monday, May 21……

109. COOKIE-UP for the Girl Scouts’ 100th Anniversary

The Girl Scouts are serving up some major history with their beloved cookies this March. If you see any Girl Scouts selling cookies throughout Barrington over the next few weeks, ask them how it feels to be 100 years old. The group is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA on March 12. This Tuesday, the author of a brand new biography about the Girl Scouts’ founder will be speaking at the Barrington Area Library. And we have a full schedule of where and when Girl Scouts will be stationed in Barrington to help fill your pantries with all the Thin Mints, Samoas and Tagalongs you can eat.

The Girl Scouts first started the tradition of selling cookies in 1933, eleven years after the group was founded. Today, the Girl Scouts say their $760 million Cookie Program is the largest girl-led business in the country and generates immeasurable benefits for girls, their councils and communities nationwide. Girls set cookie goals to support their chosen activities for the year and selling cookies helps them develop skills like goal setting, money management and business ethics.
It’s all a product of Girl Scouts founder, Juliette Gordon Low’s mission to teach girls self-reliance, resourcefulness and how to find ways to serve their communities. Low organized the first Girl Scout troop meeting of 18 girls in Savannah, Georgia on March 12, 1912. The group has since grown to 3.7 million members, including the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois, the council that serves the girls here in Barrington. Just in time for the Girl Scouts’ 100th anniversary celebration, the Barrington Area Library is excited to welcome Stacy Cordery, the author of a brand new biography about Juliette Gordon Low’s life this upcoming Tuesday, March 6th, 2012. Cordery will be at the library at 1:30 to discuss her book, Juliette Gordon Low: The Remarkable Founder of the Girl Scouts. Cordery is a biographer, historian and a professor at Monmouth College. Cordery’s book will be available for purchase and signing at the library event on Tuesday. You’ll find more information about Cordery’s visit and can register for the event at BALibrary.org and you’ll find the library at 505 N. Northwest Highway in Barrington.

If you currently belong to or have always wanted to join a book club, there’s a cool event happening at the Barrington Area Library this Friday night that will help you connect with others who love to read and share ideas about books. The library is hosting a brand new program called “One Book One Barrington” this month, where everybody reads the same book and gets together to discuss the book’s themes. The book this month is called “Listening is an Act of Love”.

299. Preschool 101 at the Barrington Area Library

When you’re new to being a mom like I am, there’s a lot to learn about getting your kids started in school. Sometimes it’s overwhelming. From traditional preschools, to the Park District to Montessori classes, Barrington offers many choices for preschool and the Barrington Area Library is helping make those decisions easier by hosting a Preschool Enrichment Fair tomorrow night.

There will be representatives at the library from 22 area preschools from 6:30 to 8PM on Tuesday, January 25th. They’ll be there to answer all of your questions about things like registration, class size and the average day for students.…

282. Sing Along with ScribbleMonster

The children’s band, ScribbleMonster will be rocking the house tomorrow morning at the Barrington Area Library. Bring your kids and plan on singing along with band members, “Scribble Jim” and “Scribble Jayne” for about an hour, starting at 10AM.
I just got off the phone with “Scribble Jim” and he says he’s really excited for tomorrow’s concert. His real name is James Dague and he’s the creator of the childrens’ band, Scribblemonster and illustrator of ScribbleBooks, a series of creative coloring books where where kids don’t have to worry about staying in the lines.…

He’s a Barrington High School graduate, he’s an ardent conservationist, he’s a filmmaker and he’s a local photographer with studios in Barrington and at his other home in Santa Monica, California. His name is Robert McGinley and he draws inspiration from the family home where he grew up in Barrington Hills, the 400+ acre “Horizon Farms” property at Old Sutton and Algonquin Roads.
Robert McGinley’s love of photography began with a class he took during his years at Barrington High School. He says it was a hobby until about 10 years ago, when he started running operations at Horizon Farms, with 220 client horses, 35 miles of fence line, 11 barns and beautiful Barrington landscapes at every turn.…
