Snow and Football on Thanksgiving

239. Celebrate a Barrington Thanksgiving

As I promised, I’ve been compiling a list of favorite Thanksgiving traditions and reasons to be thankful this year in Barrington. I didn’t meet my goal of polling 30 people. But I made it to 15 and, for that, I am thankful, kind of like making it Halfway to Hana! Of all the “favorite traditions” I heard this month, the most popular ways to celebrate here in Barrington involve family, relaxation, neighbors and football.
I’m starting our list today with Barrington Bank and Trust President, Jon Stickney……

Cooking with Erin Bailey

237. Garnish Your Holiday Table Like Chef Erin Bailey

Sometimes little details can add a world of elegance to your Thanksgiving table. That’s what Barrington chef, Erin Bailey says. And, when it comes to cooking, Erin’s a local expert. She’s a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Paris Culinary Arts School in France and, for years, she ran La Pomme de Pin, a specialty foods market and catering business she started right here in Barrington.

I recently dropped by to see Erin when she was preparing a pre-Thanksgiving meal at home. She was making mashed potatoes and the conversation quickly turned to one of her favorite subjects, food. “If you start with good ingredients, the preparation can be really simple.”…

Mystery Photo Contest in Barrington

210. "Guess Where Wednesday" & Last Week’s Winner

Two ghosts were recently spotted in Barrington, they were caught on camera and they’re our mystery photo of the week!  This one might require a little deductive reasoning, but I’m confident that the ghost busters and sweet tooths among us will be able to put two and two together.  If you can guess where in Barrington this mystery photo was taken, there’s a great prize for the winner this week.

We’ll get to this week’s prize in a minute. But first, let’s talk about last week’s winner. Just moments ago my babysitter drew the winning name and it is……

Barrington Area United Way Sample the Arts Campaign

197. Barrington Artists Unite for The United Way

Since I started writing this blog on April first, there is one Barrington photographer whose images you’ve seen featured here more than any other.  His name is Bob Lee, and after he retired, he made a decision to use his photography in charitable ways.  If you’re looking for a photo of a non-profit or community event that has taken place or was planned in Barrington, he is the go-to guy.

Bob Lee is one of 30 local artists featuring their works at businesses throughout Barrington for this year’s United Way campaign which kicks off in Barrington today.…

Bears vs. Packers

180. Hold Your Breath for a Bears Win

There’s only one thing that die-hard NFL fans will be doing in Barrington tonight, and that’s tuning in for the Bears/Packers game at Soldier Field at 7:30.  And if you’re married to a Bears fanatic like I am, you’ll be praying that they win because you know how a big loss can set the tone for the entire week or, let’s face it, the whole season.

If you feel like getting out of the house for tonight’s game, there are some great football specials being offered at several Barrington hot spots tonight. Here are a few to choose from:…

Art in the Barn Weekend at Good Shepherd Hospital

177. Art in the Barn at Good Shepherd Hospital

This is a big weekend for our friends up at Good Shepherd Hospital. They’re hosting their 36th annual “Art in the Barn” event on the hospital grounds from 10AM to 5PM on both Saturday and Sunday and they have a full schedule of art and entertainment planned, including live music, food and pony rides!

“Art in the Barn” began in 1974 when a group of ten women and local artists came up with the idea to help raise money to build the hospital here in Barrington. It started as a show with 30 artists, and this weekend, there will be about 180 artists displaying their works for sale and they’re expecting about 6,500 people to attend. There will be painters, jewelry-makers, sculptors, photographers, ceramics artists and woodworkers on hand, just to name a few. The art will be on display in barns that were used as food testing sites when the property was owned by Quaker Oats. Over the years, the annual juried art show has raised over $2.5 Million dollars for Good Shepherd Hospital. It’s a great way to spend a fall weekend in Barrington and support our local hospital at the same time.…

Sergio's Pizza in Barrington, Illinois

163. Try a Pie from Sergio’s Pizza

It’s the busiest night of the week at Sergio’s Pizza in Barrington. On a typical Friday night, the popular Barrington pizza spot serves up about 200 pizzas, and tonight, they have some big VIP orders to fill from the boy scouts, to the high school to Barrington Youth Football. Sergio’s owner, Tony Dioguardi, gave me a quick tour of the kitchen during crunch time today.

Sergio’s has been around in Barrington for the past 28 years, but Tony bought the business five years ago. He owned his own brokerage firm and decided he was ready for a change of pace……
