259. 10 on Tuesday: Halloween Parties, Trick or Treat Trot & Great Gatsby Glam

Our “10 on Tuesday” list of upcoming events in Barrington has a bit of a theme going on this week.  With that big holiday coming up just two weeks from tomorrow, I bet you can guess what it is…

That’s right!  Halloween events and costume parties for kids and adults make up most of our list this week.  But there are a few non-Halloween events as well, starting with this next gathering of the Barrington Area Library’s social book club, called LIT, at a popular new bar in town……

258. Marketplace: Norton’s U.S.A. Rewards Shoppers for Donated Coats

The owner of Norton’s U.S.A. on Lageschulte Street in Barrington is rewarding shoppers who donate gently used coats when they visit her store this month. Deborah Leydig says she’ll give all donated coats to WINGS, a local nonprofit organization working to end domestic violence and homelessness. In return, Deborah will give shoppers who contribute a coat a 20% discount on all outerwear in the store, like these Janska fleece jackets which, Deborah says, are flying off the racks.
We’ll share more about the coat donation discount and some other exciting news out of Norton’s in just a minute.
But first, we’d like to welcome Norton’s U.S.A. and Deborah Leydig to the Barrington Online Marketplace. They’re our newest members and, in case you’re new to 365Barrington.com, here’s a quick look at how the Marketplace works…

Now back to Norton’s U.S.A., an old-fashioned general store on Barrington’s Lageschulte Street housed in what used to be a livery barn in the early 1900’s. Deborah opened Norton’s in June of 2007 with a firm commitment to only carry goods made in the United States. You’ll find a wide assortment of products available, from toys to clothes to goods for your home and garden. But Deborah says absolutely everything has been made in America. “When you buy American, you keep Americans working and when Americans are working, our country is better off because they in turn have purchasing power.”
Deborah says she expanded her inventory to include more Janska coats this year, which inspired her to also start the coats for WINGS campaign. She says she fell in love with Janska’s women’s fleece jackets at a recent gift show because……

It’s Tuesday and that means it’s time for us to share our top ten picks for fun things to do and upcoming events.  It’s a list we like to call “10 on Tuesday” and it’s our way of helping spread the word about the hot happenings here in Barrington.

We’re starting this week’s list with a great party happening this Saturday night. You know all those painted horse sculptures you’ve spotted around Barrington all summer long?

All of these horses will be auctioned off to benefit the Barrington area United Way at their Roundup II Gala Party and Auction this Saturday night. That’s just one of many great things to do coming up in Barrington. Here are more details and a look at our full “10 on Tuesday” list……

253. Barrington EATS: More Chick Peas, Please!

Do you think you know my cooking style by now? My number one goal is to help you find cooking success in your own kitchen. And probably my number one recommendation for this is to shop Smart. Find ingredients that, by always having them on hand, enable you make a great meal any night of the year. And if, like this week’s topic, it has a long shelf life and costs under a $1, it finds itself at the top of the Smart ingredients list.

Chick peas, also known as Garbanzo beans, are an extremely healthy, Smart ingredient.  They have tons of iron and therefore make a great main course main ingredient……

252. “Spot the Scarecrow” Mystery Photo Contest Returns

With scarecrows decorating businesses throughout Barrington, we can’t help but reintroduce Spot the Scarecrow, the fall version of our weekly mystery photo contest here at 365Barrington.com. The first photo of our series is one of the many straw creations designed for the Village of Barrington’s annual Scarecrow Contest.  This guy is dressed up as an artist and you’ll spot him if you’re whizzing by on a pretty busy street in town.  Can you guess where he is?

And just in case this tight shot’s too tricky, here’s a more revealing look. His artwork is quite impressive for a man made of straw and the buildings in the background might give it away.  But if you can’t think of where he is now, keep looking around town and I bet you’ll find him.  You have a week to submit your guesses.

The winner of this week’s contest will receive a cool prize that has something to do with the spot where we took the picture.  That might have some of you scratching your heads, but you’ll find out next week ;).  Entering the contest is easy and you’ll find the steps below. But first, we just drew our winner from last week’s contest and her name is……

247. Guess Where Wednesday: It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane…

With this week’s mystery photo, we want to see how many of you really know the Barringtons because it’s pretty hard to miss this giant orange smiley face if you’re driving past one place that’s pretty popular this time of year. I cropped the photo to try to fake you out, but this one might be obvious. Can you guess what it’s a picture of?

If you correctly guess this week’s mystery photo, you have a chance to win a prize linked to the place where we took the picture.  So good luck with your guessing and we’ll let you know the answer when we reveal our new mystery photo on Wednesday of next week.
Now for last week’s mystery photo. This one was a stumper! For the first time in the history of our Wednesday mystery photo contests here at 365Barrington.com, no one submitted a guess. So it’s my fault for being difficult.  I just couldn’t help but share this image I recently took while on Park Avenue after I recently spotted the same building in an historic photo of downtown Barrington.  The initials, E.C. Groff, and the year, 1907 are rusty reminders of years gone by.

Several different businesses used to be housed in this building.  Does anyone remember when it was the old Ben Franklin store?  I love how the facade of today’s McGonigal’s Pub building (off in the distance in the photo below) currently looks as it did so many years ago when it was the First State Bank of Barrington……

173. Welcome the New Season with the Summer Wine Walk

We have a libation theme going this weekend with a number of beverage-centered specials and events taking place in Barrington.  With the first day of summer only five days away, merchants downtown are getting a jump start on the season by hosting the first ever Summer Wine Walk, a compliment to the well-attended Winter Wine Walk they hosted in March.

The FREE event will be hosted by participating businesses surrounding Cook and Station Streets from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 16th.  Each merchant will have a wine map for you to grab so you can see what’s available for sipping before you move on to your next destination. Participating merchants will be offering a total of 14 wines to sample along with appetizers from Cooper’s Pizza.  And to add a little summer sizzle, Park Avenue Restaurant will feature live music with Brian Saltzman from 3 to 6 p.m.
More merchants have joined the downtown wine walk for tomorrow’s event.  Here’s a look at who’s participating and what you will enjoy as you power your way through the town……
