173. Welcome the New Season with the Summer Wine Walk
We have a libation theme going this weekend with a number of beverage-centered specials and events taking place in Barrington. With the first day of summer only five days away, merchants downtown are getting a jump start on the season by hosting the first ever Summer Wine Walk, a compliment to the well-attended Winter Wine Walk they hosted in March.
The FREE event will be hosted by participating businesses surrounding Cook and Station Streets from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 16th. Each merchant will have a wine map for you to grab so you can see what’s available for sipping before you move on to your next destination. Participating merchants will be offering a total of 14 wines to sample along with appetizers from Cooper’s Pizza. And to add a little summer sizzle, Park Avenue Restaurant will feature live music with Brian Saltzman from 3 to 6 p.m.
More merchants have joined the downtown wine walk for tomorrow’s event. Here’s a look at who’s participating and what you will enjoy as you power your way through the town……

164. Hitch a Ride to Barrington Cruise Nights, 2012
We’ve waited all year, but the day has finally come! The 9th annual season of Cruise Nights and one of the most popular weekly attractions returns to downtown Barrington TONIGHT. The Village of Barrington’s first Cruise Night of 2012 was rained out last Thursday, which was supposed to be “Chevy Night”. So get ready for a double header tonight with Chevys and Exotic Cars taking the Cruise Night spotlight.
There are 13 Thursday Cruise Nights scheduled to take place in Barrington this summer and each week has a different theme. Fans vote for their favorite cars in the weekly theme and the winners get “People’s Choice Award” plaques, a picture of their car on the Village of Barrington’s website and bragging rights for the entire month! To get revved up for the new season of Cruise Nights, I picked a good old song with some great driving lyrics as a little background music for this post. Can you guess what it is?
I’ve been drivin’ all night, my hand’s wet on the wheel.
There’s a voice in my head that drives my heel.
It’s my baby callin’, says I need you here.
And it’s a half past four and I’m shiftin’ gear…
To get your motor running, be sure to play the video below before your read on……

142. Don Your Derby Hat for Barrington Children’s Charities
Dust off your derby hats and spruce up your seersucker suits, Barrington Children’s Charities’ second annual Run for the Roses Kentucky Derby party is coming up this Saturday and we’re all invited. Barrington Hills resident and Children’s Charities founder, Darby Hills (seen here on left), says there are fun new details in store for this year’s festivities, thanks, in part, to Kathleen McLaughlin, the local event planner behind the party.
Kentucky Derby-style hats in all shapes and sizes will be a big part of the entertainment at this Saturday’s event, held to benefit Barrington Children’s Charities and the national Blessings in a Backpack campaign. All proceeds from this weekend’s party will directly benefit Barrington School District 220 families who are part of the free and reduced lunches program……

136. Talk with Trustees at TONIGHT’S Town Hall Meeting
With Heinen’s Fine Foods opening this August and new shops popping up around town, there’s an exciting new energy in Barrington. We hear rumors that some other popular companies are eying Barrington as a great place to open for business. And here’s one of the burning questions we’re hearing people ask today: What businesses will be opening at the new development in the heart of downtown Barrington, on the southwest corner of Hough and Main Streets? If you want the latest scoop about the project, you’ll get it TONIGHT at the Village of Barrington’s Town Hall Meeting.
The Evanston-based developers handling the Hough-Main project say their plans include between six and ten shopping and dining options on the first floor, with office tenants on the upper floors of the three story building planned for the 2.7 acre site. Village officials say the developer is talking with multiple interested parties, but no announcements have been made about who will set up shop in the new building. This project is just one of several items on tonight’s Town Hall agenda. Here is the full list of topics they plan to discuss……

128. Help Restore Flint Creek for Earth Day
Want to make a difference this Earth Day? Then you and your kids won’t want to miss the Citizens for Conservation’s special Earth Day class in Barrington this Saturday, April 7th. The best part about the class — it’s all outdoors!
To teach the importance of plant restoration, the volunteer group is inviting the public to help them restore Flint Creek Savanna South in Barrington. Because some cutting and lifting brush is involved to make room for native vegetation, participants are encouraged to bring their own work gloves, insect repellent, pruners or loppers (it’s O.K. if you have to look it up!). Citizens for Conservation also recommend wearing closed-toe shoes, socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts.
As a reward for their hard work, kids will receive an educational poster showing native prairie plants, mammals, birds and insects that make a restored woodland and prairie their home. On top of that, there will be marshmallows for roasting on a bonfire and fifty free Sonic Slushies waiting for them after they’ve finished reviving the Barrington creek–Is there any better way to celebrate an accomplishment?…

36. Welcome Back to the Barrington Farmers Market
We’ve been waiting since last fall for this!!! The weekly Farmers Market returns to Barrington for its 11th season this Thursday. So get ready for some freshly popped kettle corn, the balloon man, the lemonade guy and the return of some of your favorite farmers. Plus, prepare to meet some brand new vendors this year. To get into the spirit of the season, I found some of my favorite farmers market photos taken by Barrington photographer, Anthony Tortoriello.
I also caught up with Farmers Market co-chair, Margaret Myren, earlier this week to get the scoop on which vendors are coming back and who will be new to the market this year. You’ll be excited to find out what she had to say……
