13. Barrington EATS: Heinen’s Fine Foods for Better Health

With the season of New Year’s resolutions in full swing, Heinen’s Fine Foods in Barrington is making it easier for us to stay on target and reach our health and wellness goals in 2013. In fact, they have a whole department in the store dedicated to subject, their Wellness Resource Center, and we decided there’s no better time than now to get to know the center’s resident wellness expert, Kadi Shipley.
With a degree in dietetics from the University of Akron, Kadi is in charge of answering questions about the thousands of products Heinen’s carries to help us improve our diets for better health. “The research is there for why eating healthy is important, but what people need to embrace individually is how good eating-well makes you feel. If people experience stress, fatigue or discomfort with their bodies, I want them to understand there are ways to eat that can solve these problems.”
When it comes to the latest health foods, drinks, vitamins and supplements available today, Kadi’s tried and tested hundreds of products. So we asked her to share a short list of things to know and products to help improve our daily diets. She boiled it down to eight great recommendations……

297. Marketplace: Fitness for All Ages at CrossFit Barrington

If a renewed focus on fitness will make your list of new years resolutions for 2013, there’s one guy in Barrington who you should meet. His name is Brian Niven, he’s one of the owners and a head coach at CrossFit Barrington and he’s the kind of guy you go to when you’re ready to commit to shaping up.
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program used by many professional athletes, police academies, tactical and military operations teams. Brian is a Barrington High School graduate who returned to Barrington to start a family after college, grad school and serving as an active duty infantry officer with the U.S Army’s 10th Mountain Division. He was deployed to Iraq for 6 months in 2004 and also served in Afghanistan in 2006 & 2007 before retiring from active duty later that year.
“The military gives you a structured way of life. You’re developing soldiers to survive, to work as a team, to focus on a specific mission, accomplish tasks and get things done. From a CrossFit standpoint, I’m developing my clients to live a better life through fitness and healthy eating and thinking about their general fitness throughout life.”

Now back to CrossFit and the gym’s beginnings here in Barrington. Brian Niven first started training people with CrossFit methods in a gym he built in his home garage. The business grew and he and his friend, Chris Bluse, opened the area’s only CrossFit training facility at 28066 Commercial Avenue in Lake Barrington in September of 2011.
Brian says their brand of CrossFit is designed for people of all ages and fitness levels……

279. Tom Heinen Shares Favorite Thanksgiving Tradition

With Thanksgiving just days away, there’s only one day left to enter our 2012 Thanksgiving Contest. Entering is as easy as answering one simple question. What are you thankful for this Thanksgiving? We’ve received quite a few entries this month and we’ll be sharing these “thankful thoughts” and favorite traditions along with the names of our three contest winners this Wednesday.
Anyone who shares what they’re thankful for in the form below by the end of the day tomorrow will be entered into our drawing to win one of three gift cards to use at Barrington’s new grocery store, Heinen’s Fine Foods. Since Heinen’s is offering the prizes, we thought we’d ask Tom Heinen what he’s thankful for this year.
Tom and his twin brother, Jeff, opened Heinen’s in Barrington this past August. The Barrington location is the company’s 18th grocery store opening and their first store outside of the greater Cleveland area. “We’re very thankful that we had the opportunity to locate a store here in Barrington and not only serve the community but hire terrific new associates that have been great to work with.” Remember when they used chopping blocks to cut the ribbon during their grand opening in Barrington? That was in honor of their grandfather, Joseph, who founded the family business when he opened a Cleveland-area butcher shop in 1929.
But the new store opening is not all Tom says he’s thankful for this year.
On a more personal note, Tom shared one way he’s spending the holiday and let us in on a favorite Thanksgiving tradition started by his grandfather, Joseph Heinen……

275. Barrington Family Prepares for ACE Hardware Opening Day

Starting this week, you’ll have fewer excuses to delay finishing those home improvement projects. ACE Hardware opens for business in Barrington at 8 a.m. this Tuesday, November 13. Longtime Barrington resident, John Brown, is opening Barrington’s new ACE Hardware where the Fisher Nuts store used to be on Northwest Highway. He recently purchased the property to bring a much needed hardware store to the area.
Brown says Barrington’s new ACE will make life easier for local homeowners, tradespeople working in the area and others with projects of all shapes and sizes. “This is a core hardware store. It will have everything someone expects from a hardware store.”
Barrington’s ACE Hardware will offer 27,000 items in seven major categories……

272. Marketplace: Beer Business Booming at Onion Pub & Brewery

On the main level, the Onion Pub and Brewery in Lake Barrington has the feel of a traditional English Pub, with giant timbers dating back 250 years overhead in the bar and dining rooms and a burning fireplace warming guests enjoying beers brewed on-site.
But there are few clues to the scale of the brewing operation going on down below and the plans this 15-year-old, family-owned business has to expand its brewing business. So we recently took a tour with Brewmaster and owner, Mike Kainz, to find out what’s in the works.
Mike grew up in Tower Lakes and graduated from Barrington High School in 1983. He started brewing beer while serving in the Peace Corps in North Africa in his early twenties, where he worked to grow food to feed orphans in Morocco……

267. Marketplace: Craft Corner Wednesdays with Wool Street & Wild Onion Brewery

When it comes to the art of brewing, serving and sampling craft beers, there are a few experts on the subject right here in Barrington. The owners of Wool Street Grill & Sports Bar and The Onion Pub & Brewery are teaming up to bring you locally brewed BEER, in a whole new way, on Wednesday nights!
Starting this fall, Wool Street is now offering on tap six craft beers currently produced at The Wild Onion Brewery in Lake Barrington, and it gets even better…
They’re also hosting a regular “Craft Corner” beer event on the last Wednesday night of each month, featuring locally brewed beers and guest beer experts, like Onion Pub owners, brewers and distributors, Mike and John Kainz.
It’s a new partnership that’s all about encouraging us to “drink local” and enjoy locally sourced and locally sold craft beers. “This concept of offering a locally brewed craft beer night with food pairings and education is totally new and unique to Barrington.”……

255. Marketplace: Developers Share Plans for Barrington Village Center

The developers planning to build two new buildings in the center of Barrington are sharing an update on the project’s progress and the prospective tenants they’re working hard to recruit.

The buildings are planned for the vacant lot on the southwest corner of Hough and Main Streets, offering approximately 22,000 square feet of first floor retail space, including restaurants, and up to 30,000 square feet of second and third story office space.

Building 1 is a one-story, 6,000 square-foot retail building (just west of M.J. Miller Jewelers). Buildings 2N and 2S (on the Hough/Main corner) are up to three-story buildings that connect on the office floors by a pedestrian walkway from the corner of the parking lot. The site will also provide over 150 parking spaces.

But the developers say it’s the site’s location that ultimately sold them on pursuing this project.
“We think this is an area that has tremendous purchasing power and has all the attributes that a retailer would want in terms of good traffic and strong demographics. If you look at a 15 minute drive time around this site, there are a lot of homes and a lot of people who we believe come into town to eat and to shop and we can further increase those numbers if the right offering is here.”
