349. Celtic Fest in Bryan McGonigal’s Own Words

McGonigal’s Pub is making it easy to be Irish in Barrington this week!  They’re hosting the community’s inaugural 2-day “Barrington Celtic Fest” starting on St. Patrick’s Day morning.  The pub is also celebrating their one year anniversary, so I thought it would be a great time to catch up with owner, Bryan McGonigal.  He’s a busy guy these days, but he took a quick break and found a comfortable seat at the bar.  With the bartender busy in the background and a pint of Guinness within easy reach, Bryan filled me in on the festival details and highlights from his first year in business.

The fest will run tomorrow and Friday from 10AM until 1AM featuring a great lineup of live Irish music, Irish dancers, Corned Beef, Cabbage, a full Irish menu, pints of beer, NCAA basketball tournament watching and plenty of people in green.  Admission is FREE and you’ll find the full festival entertainment lineup below. But first, here’s Bryan’s look at the fest and McGonigal’s first year, in his very own words.…

Matthew and Leone Clarke

341. Meet the Clarkes of Clarke’s Bakery and Deli

The month of March is one big party for a local couple that has built a thriving Barrington business around their shared passion for baking, cooking and celebrating the goodness of great homemade food. Matthew an Leone Clarke of Clarke’s Bakery and Deli are preparing feasts this month to celebrate Fat Tuesday today, St. Patrick’s Day next week, Barrington’s First Annual Celtic Fest AND their business’ 25th Anniversary. With a cup of kindness, two handfuls of hard work and a lifetime of experience in the kitchen, together the Clarkes have created a winning recipe that keeps loyal customers coming back for more.

If you drop by Clarke’s today, you’ll find Matthew or Leone at the counter, or it’ll likely be one of their two daughters who greet you. Stacey just graduated from college with a law enforcement degree and Kathrine is studying to be a teacher. Both girls grew up in the bakery and know their parents’ story well.…

2011 Chili Champion at the South Barrington Arboretum

306. Be Crowned the South Barrington Chili Champ

The results are in after Saturday’s “Chilly Challenge” Chili Cook-off in South Barrington. About 300 chili fans from in and around Barrington met at the South Barrington Arboretum Saturday afternoon to sample and vote for chili prepared by seven local restaurants.

I was one of the guest judges and snapped a few photos on the chili tour, which started at Pinstripes Bowling, Bocce & Bistro. A shuttle whisked the chili tasters off to all seven restaurants, which included Pinstripes, Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant, Nozuzmi Asian & Japanese Cuisine, Gold Class Cinemas, L’Eiffel Bistrot & Creperie, Panera Bread and defending 2010 Chili Champion, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. That’s a lot of chili for only $10 and it was so much fun! Almost all of the participants cast ballots for their favorites at the very end and it was a very close vote. But the 2011 South Barrington Arboretum Chili Champion is……

YouTube Phenom, Keenan Cahill

257. Sing It Like You Mean It

These days, you can find little doses of inspiration in all shapes, sizes and places. People who wouldn’t normally have a public voice are commanding huge audiences with the use of technology, YouTube and the social power of the internet. You may have already heard this 15-year-old’s story. His name is Keenan Cahill. He’s an Irish-American teenager now living in Chicago and he has a rare genetic disorder called Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome.

The disease has no cure, it affects only one in 25,000 people and it disables physical growth after age 8.  But, for the past few years, Keenan has been growing a giant fan base lip-syncing to popular songs from the long-gone privacy of his own bedroom.…

Hi! 😁 Today's Word of the Day is 汉语 hàn yǔ -- literally "Han Language."

So, we're backtracking... or maybe just following the path of yesterday's post 😂. Either way, it might behoove you to know the context of this word.

The 汉 hàn in 汉语 refers to the Han ethnic group -- the largest of the 56 (government-proclaimed) Chinese ethnic groups. Some data have indicated that Han people comprise 90% or more of the population. So, it's unsurprising that this large group has gotten to name one of the most common terms for Mandarin. (Remember, Mandarin is what we learn at BHS and is the official language of China. There are other dialects/languages in existence.)

Anyhoo, the point is that if one is going to be referring to Mandarn Chinese as a language, it wouldn't hurt to know how to say it two ways! 🙃

普通话 and 汉语 can be used in most of the same contexts -- 汉语 might be a little less eloquent, but you won't get in trouble for using either. 🙂
