If a renewed focus on fitness will make your list of new years resolutions for 2013, there’s one guy in Barrington who you should meet. His name is Brian Niven, he’s one of the owners and a head coach at CrossFit Barrington and he’s the kind of guy you go to when you’re ready to commit to shaping up.
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program used by many professional athletes, police academies, tactical and military operations teams. Brian is a Barrington High School graduate who returned to Barrington to start a family after college, grad school and serving as an active duty infantry officer with the U.S Army’s 10th Mountain Division. He was deployed to Iraq for 6 months in 2004 and also served in Afghanistan in 2006 & 2007 before retiring from active duty later that year.
“The military gives you a structured way of life. You’re developing soldiers to survive, to work as a team, to focus on a specific mission, accomplish tasks and get things done. From a CrossFit standpoint, I’m developing my clients to live a better life through fitness and healthy eating and thinking about their general fitness throughout life.”

Now back to CrossFit and the gym’s beginnings here in Barrington. Brian Niven first started training people with CrossFit methods in a gym he built in his home garage. The business grew and he and his friend, Chris Bluse, opened the area’s only CrossFit training facility at 28066 Commercial Avenue in Lake Barrington in September of 2011.
Brian says their brand of CrossFit is designed for people of all ages and fitness levels……

There’s a new event happening in Barrington tomorrow that’s all about encouraging kids to get outside, explore nature and have a blast while breathing fresh air. Three local organizations are coming together to host the first ever Barrington Kids Fest at Citizens Park and they have a long list of exciting outdoor activities planned for the day.
This is the first year that the Barrington Breakfast Rotary Club, the Barrington Park District and the Leave No Child Inside initiative of the Greater Barrington and Lake Zurich areas are joining forces to create a unique Barrington Area Kids Fest. They’ve decided to combine the 11th annual Community Kite Fly and the 2nd annual Family Nature Fest to form one all-encompassing outdoorsy festival and it’s totally FREE and open to all kids and families in the community.
A ton of local groups, organizations and businesses are supporting the event to provide families with action-packed recreational and educational activities designed to get everyone moving and active. In addition to your kites, be sure to bring your bikes this year. One of the tomorrow’s highlights will be a family bike adventure through Cuba Marsh led by Barrington cyclist, Bob Lee……

The scent of spring was in the air this week and, for the first time in months, the weather’s starting to feel a little more welcoming. Daylight savings is this Sunday, the sun is shining a little bit brighter and the temperature is starting to rise. It occurred to me this week that now’s the time to start getting my kids’ warm weather wardrobe together. At 3 years, 2 years and 7-months-old, my kids need new sizes every season so there’s no way I’m missing the Growing Cents of Style consignment sale that’s going on this weekend, March 10th and 11th, in Barrington!
A Barrington mom named Jenny Welsh has been organizing two seasonal Growing Cents of Style consignment sales a year since the fall of 2006 and the event grows by leaps and bounds each year. “The event has grown from 43 consignors at our first sale to over 300 at our upcoming sale. I have consignors from all over the Chicago area and Wisconsin. We will have over 20,000 items for sale this weekend and will see over 1,000 shoppers this sale…”…Continue Reading

What would you picture if you were asked to photograph something that makes you laugh, cry, something you love, something beautiful or something you can’t live without? Your images would undoubtedly speak volumes about your values, your personality and the people who matter to you most. Barrington portrait photographer, Thomas Balsamo, recently posed that challenge to 28 area special needs children in a contest called Express Yourself. With the help of special needs advocacy group, Barrington Area Special Voices, this project is the latest way Thomas has used his lens to both enlighten and empower.
For the Express Yourself Photo Contest, Thomas armed contestants with cameras, confidence and a few tricks of his trade. He paired them with local photography experts, encouraged them to explore and inspired them to share their feelings creatively.
He rewarded their work with prizes and praise. The project became the focus of his latest book and a brand new photography exhibit debuting in Barrington this week. And now here’s where we come in……
