65. Help Good Shepherd Hospital at Art in the Barn

If you’ve ever made a trip to Good Shepherd Hospital for medical needs, planned or unplanned, this is one weekend where you can return to repay the favor. The 37th Annual Art in the Barn juried fine art show is happening this Saturday and Sunday, September 24th and 25th. Over 175 artists will be there to sell their creations and share their earnings to help fund hospital initiatives designed to keep us healthy.

A group of 10 women organized the first Art in the Barn with only 30 artists in 1974 to help raise money to build the hospital here in Barrington. The show has grown and, this weekend, they’re expecting up to 7,000 people to attend.…

62. Remember 9/11

A survivor who was in the Pentagon during the September 11th attacks shared his story in Barrington last week and the community hosted a beautiful memorial service on Sunday to mark the 10 year anniversary.
Families, veterans, police officers, firefighters, elected officials and others from the community gathered in the morning at Memorial Park to remember the attacks, honor the victims and thank those who have devoted their lives to defending our country.…

Heinen's Store in Avon, Ohio

59. Heinen’s Fine Foods Store to Open in Barrington

Staples office supply closed for business in Barrington this week but, as Alexander Graham Bell once said, “When one door closes, another opens.” Heinen’s Fine Foods, a Cleveland-based grocery business with 17 stores in Northeastern Ohio, announced today they’re opening their newest store in Barrington next summer. They’re moving into the space that Staples is leaving at the Shops at Flint Creek. Today I spoke with one of the two Heinan brothers who run the business to learn more about the store and their decision to choose Barrington.
The Barrington move is a bold step for the 82-year-old, family-owned company because it’s Heinen’s first venture outside Northeast Ohio. “It took us 82 years to get to 17 stores in Cleveland, so this is not about being big and fast. This is about being the best.” Jeff Heinen says their plan is that the Barrington location will be just the beginning of a multi-store expansion into Greater Chicagoland. “This will be a huge challenge for us and we’re not overconfident.”
The Heinens say they’ve been considering a move to Barrington for quite some time. Village planners first reached out to the business about a move here in 2007 and the brothers came to town to tour the space last summer.  They considered two other locations, one in Lake Forest and one in another state, before deciding on Barrington.…

Dancing in the Streets of Downtown Barrington

56. Get in on the New Barrington Dance Craze

There’s a new community dance craze taking over the streets of Barrington. “Flash Mobs” have become the latest rage. If you watch Glee, follow YouTube or are a hip and happening reader of 365Barrington.com, I’m sure you know all about them ;).  For those of you who’d like a little background, Flash Mobs are “large groups of people who assemble suddenly in public and perform a dance or unusual act for a brief time, then disperse.” The performance is supposed to be a secret, but a little birdie has let me in on what could be Barrington’s next Flash Mob.

Barrington’s last Cruise Night of the season is happening downtown on Cook Street tomorrow night, starting at 6:30. My source tells me that, if you’re there at around 6:45, you might just get Flash Mobbed, like this one that happened a couple of weeks ago……

With more than 150 prizes on the line, the stakes are high for tomorrow’s duck races. Your kids will have a blast at this end-of-summer bash which doubles as a fundraiser to help Illinois children facing serious illness. Here’s how it works……

46. Sample 50 Fine Wines at Uncork Barrington 2011

If you love fine wine and savor opportunities to sip samples from around the globe, you don’t want to miss tomorrow night’s 7th Annual “Uncork Barrington” event. I have attended this party every year since it started back in 2005 and, like a fine wine, it just keeps getting better with age.

The party starts at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, July 8th, and the planners have decided to extend the end time an hour this year, until 10 p.m., to accommodate those who get home later from work. When you enter the event, you’ll receive a complimentary wine glass and a wine passport to track your tastings.  There will be 50 different wines from all regions of the world available to sample along with complimentary hors d’oeuvres from some of the finest local restaurants.…

41. July 4th Barrington Brat Tent Returns with a Bang

The Brat Tent entrance will blast open today to celebrate four days of July 4th festivities in downtown Barrington. The 27th Annual Barrington Fourth of July celebration will feature a packed schedule of entertainment for kids, families AND adults. We’ll be sharing fun details and the full events schedule in the coming days here at 365Barrington.com, but one of today’s highlights will be the festival’s opening performance this afternoon by OD TAPO IMI.
OD TAPO IMI is a Chicagoland band whose name is an acronym for “Oil Drums That Are Pounded Out Into Musical Instruments”.  They’re known for their Caribbean-style beats and best described as “Jimmy Buffet Meets Blue Man Group.”

OD TAPO IMI will light up the Barrington Brat Tent stage at 12:30 this afternoon with a powerful mix of vocals, steel drums, percussion, guitars and horns playing all genres of popular music with a unique tropical twist. But they’re just a delicious appetizer for a great list of highlights planned for Barrington’s Fourth Festivities this year.…

Weekly Farmers Market Returns to Barrington

36. Welcome Back to the Barrington Farmers Market

We’ve been waiting since last fall for this!!! The weekly Farmers Market returns to Barrington for its 11th season this Thursday. So get ready for some freshly popped kettle corn, the balloon man, the lemonade guy and the return of some of your favorite farmers.  Plus, prepare to meet some brand new vendors this year.  To get into the spirit of the season, I found some of my favorite farmers market photos taken by Barrington photographer, Anthony Tortoriello.
I also caught up with Farmers Market co-chair, Margaret Myren, earlier this week to get the scoop on which vendors are coming back and who will be new to the market this year.  You’ll be excited to find out what she had to say……

Cook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle Visits Barrington

31. Meet Cook Co. Board President, Toni Preckwinkle

Do you live or work in Cook County? Do you have questions about how our tax dollars are spent? Are you curious about the changes in store now that there’s a new Cook County Board President at the helm? Well, get this. The new woman on top, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, will be visiting Barrington on Monday of next week to talk about her plans for the county and answer our questions. It’s a rare opportunity to meet one of the key players in Cook County government, right in our own back yard! A great turnout will send a message that Barrington cares and is paying attention to county business, but there are only a few more hours left to RSVP.
Ms. Preckwinkle was elected last November and sworn in last December as the first woman elected president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. She succeeds Todd Stroger, whose family occupied a seat on the Cook County Board for 40 years. At the outset, Ms. Preckwinkle made a promise to repeal her predecessor’s sales tax increase. She also warned that her first county budget will include some big cuts to begin easing the county’s $478 million budget deficit.…

Happy International Women’s Day to all women who live with, or care for someone with, mental illness. According to NAMI, “1 in 8 women experiences depression in their lifetime; twice the rate as men, regardless of race or ethnic background.” Furthermore, “some experiences are unique to women, including post-partum changes, infertility, and hormonal fluctuations throughout their lives." Access to mental health care is critically important, as shown during COVID-19, as well as the equality of access to it.
