184. Pop In to Help Teens at New Pop Up Art Gallery

A Barrington artist opened a temporary a “Pop Up Gallery of Art” next door to the drive-through Starbucks on Northwest Highway in Barrington earlier this month. For the past four weeks, Janet Mamon has used the space to feature her art and host yoga classes, gong baths and Creative Journey workshops. And tonight, she’s giving back by hosting an art sale for a local cause devoted to helping kids with thoughts of suicide.

Janet says she’ll give 50% of the proceeds from the sale of her artwork tonight to HERE in Barrington, a coalition of youth, parents and community members providing resources to promote positive mental health and reduce the occurrence of suicide.  For Janet, it’s a cause that hits close to home.  “I was in that very place years ago and struggled as a teenager with some of my own thoughts….”…

95. ‘Express Yourself’ at Photo Exhibit’s Opening Night

What would you picture if you were asked to photograph something that makes you laugh, cry, something you love, something beautiful or something you can’t live without?  Your images would undoubtedly speak volumes about your values, your personality and the people who matter to you most. Barrington portrait photographer, Thomas Balsamo, recently posed that challenge to 28 area special needs children in a contest called Express Yourself. With the help of special needs advocacy group, Barrington Area Special Voices, this project is the latest way Thomas has used his lens to both enlighten and empower.
For the Express Yourself Photo Contest, Thomas armed contestants with cameras, confidence and a few tricks of his trade.  He paired them with local photography experts, encouraged them to explore and inspired them to share their feelings creatively.
He rewarded their work with prizes and praise.  The project became the focus of his latest book and a brand new photography exhibit debuting in Barrington this week.  And now here’s where we come in……

330. Show Your Stuff at the Barrington Art Festival

With more snow in the overnight forecast, I’m happy to have reason to show you this photo I took during last May’s Barrington Art Festival. Puffy clouds, bright blue skies, sleeveless shirts and, yes, Barrington’s 2011 Memorial Day Weekend Art Festival are right around the corner. Do you remember how hot it was during last year’s festival? I do! Now I’m daydreaming….about sunshine and summer fun. (sigh) Ok, I’m back. Anyway, Barrington Art Festival organizers have just started recruiting all “youth” artists who want to feature their work this year.

The company that runs Barrington’s art festival, Amdur Productions, just opened the application process for the festival’s Youth Art Division.…

Art in the Barn Weekend at Good Shepherd Hospital

177. Art in the Barn at Good Shepherd Hospital

This is a big weekend for our friends up at Good Shepherd Hospital. They’re hosting their 36th annual “Art in the Barn” event on the hospital grounds from 10AM to 5PM on both Saturday and Sunday and they have a full schedule of art and entertainment planned, including live music, food and pony rides!

“Art in the Barn” began in 1974 when a group of ten women and local artists came up with the idea to help raise money to build the hospital here in Barrington. It started as a show with 30 artists, and this weekend, there will be about 180 artists displaying their works for sale and they’re expecting about 6,500 people to attend. There will be painters, jewelry-makers, sculptors, photographers, ceramics artists and woodworkers on hand, just to name a few. The art will be on display in barns that were used as food testing sites when the property was owned by Quaker Oats. Over the years, the annual juried art show has raised over $2.5 Million dollars for Good Shepherd Hospital. It’s a great way to spend a fall weekend in Barrington and support our local hospital at the same time.…
